HAVE YOU LEARNED HOW TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS FROM A FEMALE LEADER?
Updated: Jul 7, 2018
I have had the great gift of being coached by the fantastic and very real Steve Chandler for close to 15 now. He's been a huge influence in my life and work and I wouldn't want it any other way.
I consider my first coach to be Dr. Mary Hulnick - my boss for 12 years, the co-founder of the University of Santa Monica and co-developer of the Principles and Practices of Spiritual Psychology.
Michelle Abend Bauman, my beloved friend and business partner and I worked with the extraordinary Nancy Kline, and one of my all-time favorite coaches and counselors is Johanna Jenkins, also a longtime faculty member at USM.
FEMALE COACHES, HAVE YOU LEARNED HOW TO GROW
YOUR BUSINESS FROM A FEMALE LEADER?
This is a question worth slowing down on and looking at.
Because I haven't. Early on Michelle and I were very aware that there were a small number of women at the top of the game in terms of earnings in the coaching community we walked in. There were also no women that we could see or were aware of that were teaching or coaching coaches in a public way, in the service approach that Steve Chandler and Rich Litvin teaches.
IMPORTANT - BACK IN 2009 . . .
Michelle and I decided early on that this needed to be rectified. We decided that it was important that women in this profession had strong women to look to and learn from about coaching, about being a strong professional and creating a flourishing practice where, if you wanted to, you could have strong fees and flourish. At a minimum it was important to us that female coaches had women to look up to, who they could learn from about how to make a good living that supported them in whatever they wanted.
THE PROFESSION OF COACHING IS PREDOMINANTLY WOMEN
Look around - at Steve Chandler's ACS school, at the University of Santa Monica, at Rich's intensives, or any of the online programs. There are more women in this profession than men currently.
COME LEARN AT A SCHOOL THAT'S DEVELOPED BY WOMEN AND LED BY A WOMAN
You might be asking, "Why does this matter? Who cares if I learn about how to grow my business from a man or a woman?"
On one level it matters nothing. Great teaching is great teaching, and great coaching is great coaching (hence why my coach has been Steve Chandler for so long!).
On another level, it matters a lot. According to a recent survey published by Glassdoor, "Women negotiated less than their male counterparts. Sixty-eight percent of women accepted the salary they were offered and did not negotiate, a 16-percentage point difference when compared to men (52%)."
THE SAME IS TRUE IN THE PROFESSION OF COACHING
For many years before I became a coach I did not negotiate well on my own behalf - or at all. Michelle was the same - the tendency to want to be "liked" and to not seem "greedy or demanding" won out, without our conscious awareness. And as a result, we made less money - and these early negotiations affected us financially for many years, over and over.
Female coaches do the same thing - we tend to "shy away" from being bold, from setting stronger fees, from language that reflects strength and decisiveness.
E-MAILS FROM FEMALE COACHES
When I read female coaches’ e-mail communications to both prospective clients and clients (I have read hundreds upon hundreds of coaches’ e-mails) the unconscious language of "niceness" and "wanting to be liked" is everywhere. There is so much abdicating leadership to the recipient in the name of not wanting to seem "strong or bossy."
This school is a place where male and female coaches will come and learn from strong women. Women who have walked the territory of abandoning themselves because there was discomfort around being "strong" or saying NO.
There's GREAT value in learning how to strengthen yourself professionally from those who have walked in your shoes, from people who have been challenged as females to bridge both being a woman and being a strong, successful, unapologetic professional.
One of those women is me. The other is my colleague and excellent coach of coaches Amber Krzys.
Amber came from the world of acting, dance, and Broadway before she earned her Master's Degree in Spiritual Psychology. She knows a LOT about making herself small and more "attractive" so that she is liked and approved of.
Amber Krzys has done the rigorous inner work of saying goodbye to the old stories that held her back from being strong in her Professional Self. She did a big chunk of this work at the University of Santa Monica - and she also did a big chunk of this work with Michelle Abend Bauman who was one of the first coaches to take a stand for Amber very directly in this area, calling her forward. Amber Krzys has served hundreds of women for the past 8 years in letting go of limiting beliefs around their bodies, their businesses, and their relationships. And she has successfully assisted male and female coaches in becoming stronger and more successful in their practices.
Whether you come to this school or not, and whether you are a man or a woman, be glad that there is now a school for coaches that's 100% led by a woman, and where the lead faculty are women, and the Director of the school is a woman - one of the strongest women I know, thank you Amy Hruby!
And, be glad that there's fantastic men willing to join in and be part of this team as exceptional guest faculty - because that's important too. Thank you Steve Chandler, Stephen McGhee, and Devon Bandison.
I could have created a school only for female coaches. I didn't, because it's important that we work together and grow together. Our clients are men and women.
FEMALE COACHES, I WANT YOU - (and I WANT YOU TOO, MALE COACHES!)
If you are a female coach and you have yet to be served by a strong female coach, I want you.
Come and grow your business in a school where you can grow in ways you haven't yet. Both you and your bank account. Your level of boldness and your willingness to be YOU as a strong professional can grow. You don't need to be "harder" and you don't need to be a "goddess" to flourish. You can be YOU.
Male coaches, I want you as well. Your presence matters - because we will all learn more being together.
JAN 2019 - IT BEGINS!
Enrollment is happening. There are fantastic men and women saying YES. Here's the info on the school, let's talk:
With loving for YOU!
